Purchasing new appliances for your new home or renovation project is very exciting. If you aren't careful, however, the cost of these appliances can add up to a terrifying amount. You can save money by buying less expensive models of some appliances, but you should spend a lot of the extra costs on others. Factors such as efficiency and product materials can end up costing a lot over the long run. Here's a list of where to save and where to spend.

Washing Machine
Spending a little more on your washing machine can save you big money as the years go on. Newer machines are nearly three times more energy efficient than older machines. Some machines only heat the water that's needed. The faster the spin cycle during wash, the dryer the clothes will be after washing. This means that the clothes will spend less time, and less energy, in the dryer. What this ultimately translates to is savings on your energy and utility bills. If you spend a few hundred dollars more on your machine, you can save hundreds to thousands of dollars in energy costs over the course of its life.
Refrigerator
You can save a little money when purchasing your refrigerator. The newest, most expensive, models of refrigerators aren't always the best option. If you're looking for an economical choice, make sure your new fridge is energy star efficient. This will not only save you money on your power bill, but can also earn you a tax credit. Also, you don't necessarily need or want the most expensive stainless steel material. You can save money on a less expensive fridge and then purchase faux stainless steel to cover the fridge with later. This not only saves you money, but it is actually easier to clean and doesn't show as many smudges and fingerprints. Make sure to buy appliance insurance in case something goes wrong soon after your purchase.
Dis Washer
A dishwasher uses less water than washing dishes by hand, so it is worth the cost of the machine. You do not necessarily need the latest and greatest models, however. Just like the refrigerator, the most important thing about the dishwasher is energy efficiency. You will save on your energy bill and taxes when you purchase the right machine. Save money by purchasing a smaller model, if you can. You also don't need the greatest, brightest materials, but can use faux stainless steel here as well.
Oven
Unless you cook massive meals often, a traditional oven should do the trick in your home. The home stores carrie models with all the bells and whistles. This can include warming drawers, and double ovens. This may come in handy around Thanksgiving, but otherwise will probably be unnecessary. Again, keep in mind energy efficiency and cost of materials. Don't splurge unnecessarily on fancy ovens unless the new parts are really important to you.
Range
The debate over gas vs. electric ranges is a slightly more complicated ones. Electric ranges are less expensive and easier to install and maintain. Gas ranges use less, and cleaner, energy, but are, obviously, more prone to gas leaks and therefore more dangerous. This one may be an "up to you" situation. Do your research and decide which appliance may be right for you. Whatever you do, just make sure you purchase new appliances before your old ones break. Appliances usually go on sale around September and October, as well as around the holidays and January. If your appliances begin acting up, give yourself enough time to properly research and purchase a replacement model before you reach an emergency situation. Splurge for energy efficiency, but save money on fancy materials. Good luck on your appliance hunt!
